January 2022 Wrap-Up

January: a month dominated by the Graceling universe!

.

I had one goal for my January TBR: to reread the first three in the Graceling series, so I could finally, a year after its release, read Winterkeep. (Reading new releases even remotely near to when they’re released is a 2022 reading goal of mine, don’t worry.)

Of course, I started with the original: Graceling! It’s been about a decade since I read it, and I had very strong memories of it–and it did not disappoint. Not only did I love the storytelling, and the universe, and the characters, but it had a fairy dust sprinkling of nostalgia that made it even better for all the time we’ve spent apart. 10/10 lived up to the hype in my own head. Long live Lady Katsa.

After Graceling came Fire! Fire is the prequel-ish book of the series, and I remembered, in the opening chapters, finding it a much harder read than Graceling–but I actually found that made me love it more, this time around. I thought it was beautifully told, with so much nuance and love–and it’s still the only one in the series to make me cry.

So on to Bitterblue! Back in the main Graceling-verse, ten years on; this time being visited by Katsa and co, and mainly following Bitterblue herself–but with a Fire cameo that made me squeal. But oh boy, if I thought Fire was a hard read, I was woefully unprepared for Bitterblue…

And finally, the one that inspired it all: Winterkeep! These are long and relatively dense books that require some mental health breaks for me, so January is ending as I start Winterkeep… But that still counts for my January TBR, right?

.

And that was my reading January! Out of the Graceling-verse and fantasy altogether, now, for some seasonal February romances…

.

How was your reading January?

      1. That’s great to hear! I obviously wasn’t a huge fan of Giddon in Graceling, but he really started growing on me during Bitterblue, so I was thrilled when I got to see so much of him in Winterkeep! πŸ₯°
